HOSPITALS
AND REFERRAL SERVICES
The number of
leprosy cases needing hospitalization has reduced over the
years. However due to the change in the strategy of leprosy
work more number of referral cases with various complications
are reported in the NGO centers from the neighboring
districts. The Government is attaching greater responsibility
to the NGOs in the areas of disability care as they have
specific skills in this area. Even after the elimination goal
is attained there will be a need to maintain a certain level
of activities to ensure that the remaining tasks are
accomplished through the Referral Centres and Hospitals
managed by the NGOs.
Swiss Emmaus Œ
India supported NGOs are maintaining 9 base hospitals in 5
States with a total bed strength of 566. These hospitals
acquired the needed infrastructure and equipments for the
delivery of quality services by qualified personnel including
Medical Officers, Nursing and Paramedical staff in various
departments. During the year 4713 leprosy patients have been
admitted for various complications such as physiotherapy,
ulcer care, general illness, surgery etc.
