SAIL is the first of its kind launched by GLRA - India as a Pilot project against the background of having integrated leprosy. Government of Tamilnadu accorded permission to GLRA India for 3 main areas of activities: 1. Training of GoverNMent. public health staff (all categories including Medical Officers) 2. POD activities at the PHC and 3. Socio Economic Rehabilitation Services at the district level.

The team of SAIL staff visit each PHC, Block PHC, Taluk headquarter hospitals and Municipal hospitals as per an advance tour programme and deliver the following services directly to the patients with the help of the PHC staff such as ulcer dressing, distribution of self care kits, POD kits, physiotherapy services, distribution of MCR chappals, detection of early deformities and patient education activities. Each PHC has allotted a service area for SAIL activities in the PHC premises with active co-operation of Medical Officer and Deputy Director of Health Services of the district.
